Academic staff of the Department of Information Technologies at Sumy State University have successfully completed the professional development program “Designing and Teaching Online Courses for the DigiUni Project” and joined the next stage of the international project Digital University – Open Ukrainian Initiative (DigiUni), which focuses on the development of innovative digital educational courses.

The Department of Information Technologies actively participated in the project aimed at creating digital courses using innovative educational technologies. The internal training program involved Viktoriia ANTYPENKO, PhD in Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Information Technologies; Iryna BARANOVA, PhD in Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Information Technologies; Olha BOIKO, PhD in Technical Sciences, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Information Technologies; Nataliia FEDOTOVA, PhD in Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Information Technologies; Volodymyr NAHORNYI, PhD in Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Information Technologies; and Yuliia PARFENENKO, PhD in Technical Sciences, Associate Professor, Deputy Head of the Department for Research, Associate Professor of the Department of Information Technologies.

The training program was designed to enhance the digital competencies of academic staff and prepare them for the creation of modern educational content that meets European standards. Participants mastered the principles of online course design, contemporary active learning methodologies, gamification and microlearning tools, and gained practical experience working with the DigiPlatform digital environment.

The training was delivered by Yurii ZUBAN, Director of the E-Learning Technologies Center; Oksana SHOVKOPLYAS, Head of the Department of Computer Science; and Anna NENIA, Head of the Department of Information Technologies.

Successful completion of the program marks an important step in preparing faculty members to develop modern digital educational products. Currently, representatives of the Department of Information Technologies are working on the creation of courses that will be presented on the national digital educational platform within the DigiUni project as well as on Sumy State University’s open educational platform, Examenarium.

On June 5, the Department of Information Technologies hosted an exceptionally relevant and dynamic open lecture for students of the Computer Science program. The guest speaker was Dmytro Yeremenko, a successful graduate of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at Sumy State University, who currently serves as a Tech Lead at MindK and has more than 11 years of practical experience in the IT industry.

The topic of the meeting spoke for itself and generated significant interest among students: “What’s Going On? And What Am I Supposed to Do Now?” – How AI Has Changed Everything and Forces Us to Change. The speaker engaged the audience in an open and critical discussion about how generative artificial intelligence is transforming software development practices, the labor market, and the skill set required of future engineers.

During his presentation, Dmytro Yeremenko delivered an in-depth analysis of current technological trends that clearly demonstrate a radical paradigm shift in the IT industry. He began with a realistic warning: traditional approaches to learning and software development are rapidly becoming outdated, while the ability to simply write basic code is losing its value. Knowledge of the syntax of popular programming languages has become a widely accessible commodity, as artificial intelligence can handle such tasks within seconds.

Moreover, a phenomenon known as the “vanishing middle” is emerging, where AI increasingly absorbs entry-level tasks by automating template-based coding, basic refactoring, and simple bug fixing. This disrupts the traditional entry path into the industry for junior developers and requires an evolution toward the concept of Software Engineer 2.0, based on the principle of “adapt or disappear.”

In these new realities, the traditional Software Development Life Cycle is being replaced by a new model — AIDLC (AI Development Life Cycle) — in which AI agents directly perform coding and deployment tasks, while humans move into higher-level supervisory roles focused on requirements validation, constraint definition, and exercising final veto authority.

However, rapid automation also brings what the speaker described as the “speed paradox.” The uncontrolled pace at which AI generates code often disrupts testing and integration processes, creating chaos and increasing system recovery times. Therefore, one of the key conclusions of the lecture was that computer science today is no longer primarily about writing code, but about understanding the limits of computation. While syntax can be generated by machines, the most challenging and fundamental responsibilities remain with humans: designing data structures, building system architectures, managing concurrency, and applying critical thinking.

Drawing on his experience as a Tech Lead, Dmytro shared practical advice for aspiring professionals. He emphasized that rather than competing with AI in coding speed, future specialists should focus on developing a deep understanding of software architecture, algorithms, business logic, and the ability to effectively manage AI as a tool for enhancing their own productivity.

From 11 to 15 May 2026, the second study visit within the framework of the international ALMEX project took place at the University of Alicante (Spain). Over the course of five days, representatives of partner universities exchanged experience, explored European practices of alumni engagement, and discussed strategic approaches to the development of university communities.

Sumy State University was represented at the study visit by a delegation consisting of:
Anna NENIA – Head of the Department of Information Technologies, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor;
Alla KRASULIA – Head of the International Cooperation Office, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences;
Alona YEVDOKYMOVA – Head of the Educational Department for Internships and Integration with Employers, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Oleg Balatskyi Department of Management; and
Iryna SLABKO – Head of the General Organizational Support and International Protocol Group of the International Cooperation Office.

Representatives of Ukrainian Catholic University, Zaporizhzhia National University, National University of Water and Environmental Engineering, SGH Warsaw School of Economics, and the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance also participated in the visit. This international cooperation created an open space for discussing alumni engagement as an important component of university development and strengthening partnership networks.

The programme of the visit covered key aspects of alumni community development, including alumni management and communication, employability support, digital engagement tools, fundraising, inclusion, and lifelong learning.

The official opening of the event took place with the participation of Antonio Fuster, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Economics; Carolina Madlen, Director of OGPI; and Ester Gallego, Director of the Employment and Social Inclusion Unit.

During the thematic sessions, participants gained in-depth insights into the University of Alicante’s experience in developing an active alumni community. Special attention was devoted to career development and employability. Representatives of the University of Alicante and its partner organizations presented approaches to integrating career counselling, labour market analysis, and support for entrepreneurial initiatives within a comprehensive alumni engagement strategy. Practical examples of cooperation with employers demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach in creating professional opportunities for students and graduates.

A separate thematic block of the programme focused on inclusion and the international dimension of alumni engagement. Discussions centred on supporting Ukrainian students and graduates abroad, maintaining connections with alumni communities amid contemporary societal challenges, and identifying effective formats for international cooperation. During discussions of the W-RISE project and a thematic round table, participants exchanged experiences in working with displaced students and graduates and examined practical cases of supporting university communities. Representatives of FUNDEUN, the Amigos de Ucrania initiative, and participants of the W-RISE pilot phase made a valuable contribution to the discussion by sharing examples of international solidarity, partnership cooperation, and support for the Ukrainian academic community.

The use of digital platforms and CRM systems, audience segmentation, the development of communication strategies, and fostering a culture of philanthropy among graduates were highlighted as essential components of long-term university engagement with its community.

In addition to the working sessions, the programme included campus tours, networking meetings, and cultural activities that facilitated informal communication and strengthened cooperation among partners.

The participation of the Head of the Department of Information Technologies in the SSU delegation during the second study visit within the ALMEX project provided a valuable opportunity for professional exchange, familiarization with modern European practices of alumni network development, and the generation of new ideas for further enhancing engagement with the department’s graduates, expanding international partnerships, and supporting the processes of internationalization and sustainable development of the university.

Professor of the Department of Information Technologies at Sumy State University, Vira SHENDRYK, has received international professional recognition from one of the world’s leading academic publishers,  Springer Nature.

On May 25, 2026, Computer Science students attended an exceptionally engaging and productive open lecture titled “Agile in Real Projects.” The guest speaker was Yevheniia Kashcheieva, Quality Engineering Manager at  EPAM, who shared her extensive professional experience with future IT specialists.

Yevheniia has more than 13 years of experience in the IT industry. Her professional journey is a strong example for students: she took her first step into IT while still in her third year of university through the company’s external training courses. Over the years, she has progressed from an entry-level specialist to the leader of a large professional unit. Throughout her career, Yevheniia has successfully worked as a Test Manager and Delivery Manager, and today, alongside her management responsibilities, she is actively involved in developing and driving the Automated Quality Assurance (AQA) direction within the .NET discipline.

During the online lecture, the speaker gave a detailed overview of how Agile development methodologies work in real large-scale commercial projects. Students learned why textbook theory does not always fully match real-world practice, what challenges team members face at different stages of the software development lifecycle, and how adaptability together with a strong focus on customer value helps create successful IT products.

The meeting was especially valuable because Yevheniia is also an experienced mentor and educator. She shared practical advice on how students can begin their professional journey, which hard and soft skills deserve attention already at this stage, and how to prepare for a first role in an IT company.

At the end of the lecture, students had the opportunity to ask questions related both to Agile methodology and to the specifics of managers’ and QA engineers’ work in distributed teams.

Students of Sumy Lyceum № 33 of the Sumy City Council became winners of the SSU IT-School IT4Teens competition!

The Department of Information Technologies at Sumy State University recently completed a series of webinars of the SSU IT-School IT4Teens for students in grades 8–11. During the program, participants explored modern digital tools, worked with 3D modeling, game development, and web technologies, and also created their own projects.

The final stage of the program was the competition, where students presented their projects and demonstrated the skills they had gained in practice.

The participants’ projects were highly praised by the commission of the Department of Information Technologies for their creativity, high level of technical skills, spatial imagination, and attention to detail.
