Specialty «Information technology of design» originates from the Department of descriptive geometry and graphics, which was created in 01.09.1972 by order №960-1 by separation from the department of general scientific disciplines of the Sumy branch of HPI named after V. I. Lenin.

19.09.1997 by decree №212-1 this department was eliminated by combining with the department the basics of machine design. The last was created on 21.09.1981 by decree №201-11 as the department of machine parts, theories of mechanisms and machines by dividing the department of material resistance, machine parts of lifting and transport machines and equipment. 30.12.1993 by decree №62-1 renamed into the department of basics of machine design.

01.06.2005 by decree №198-1 the department of basics of machine design was reorganized into the department of information technology design.
