The Department of Information Technologies held section meetings within the framework of the IMA::2026 conference

On April 23–24, the Department of Information Technology hosted the “Information Technology in Design” section sessions as part of the International Scientific and Technical Conference “Informatics, Mathematics, Automation (IMA::2026).”

More than 80 abstracts were submitted for the section. Participants included representatives from leading higher education institutions and the IT industry, such as Sumy State University, Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design, Almaty International University of Information Technology (Kazakhstan), Turan-Astana University (Kazakhstan), and the Kyiv-based IT company “Transient Technologies.”

The sessions featured a wide range of scientific reports covering modern trends in IT development — from web development and modeling to the application of machine learning and optimization methods.

Following the sessions, the organizing committee recognized the best presentations:

1st Place:

“Using quadratic discriminant analysis for classification of turbine bearing units’ states” (I.A. Zelinskyi, group IT-21, supervisor Y.O. Lavrov)

“Information Technology for Daily Nutrition’s Personalised Selection” (P.O. Avdiienko, group IT.m-41n, supervisor Y.V. Parfenenko)

“Algorithm for the primary deployment of vehicles on a route to ensure uniform traffic intervals” (D.O. Galkin, group IT-21, supervisor S.M. Vashchenko)

3rd Place:

“OpenGL-based shooter game application” (V.M. Tsiukh, group IT-21, supervisor I.V. Baranova)

“Web application for street art popularity” (S.O. Kryvets, group IT-21, supervisor A.V. Nenia)

“Classifier for determining the recommended type of cutting tool” (S.D. Bodnar, group IT-21, supervisors A.V. Nenia, Y.O. Lavrov)

The IMA::2026 conference has become an important platform for exchanging scientific ideas, presenting research results, and establishing cooperation between educational institutions and IT companies.

Professional Development Program “Practical AI: Tools for Modern Education” Completed

From 13 to 26 April 2026, an online professional development program titled “Practical AI: Tools for Modern Education” was held for members of the NGO “Progresylni”.

We congratulate Yuliia Parfenenko, Associate Professor of the Department of Information Technologies, on successfully completing the program and obtaining a certificate.

The training focused on the practical use of artificial intelligence in modern education. Over the course of 30 hours (1 ECTS credit), participants explored key areas of AI application in teaching and learning.

The program covered:

  • use of AI tools for data analysis, visualization, and development of educational materials;
  • processing of learning resources, including summarization and content structuring;
  • application of AI to support teaching, communication with students, and learning assistance;
  • use of AI in individual, team, and project-based academic work.

The acquired knowledge will be used to improve teaching methods within the IT educational programs, update teaching and methodological materials, and further integrate modern AI tools into the educational process.

IT Department Staff Attend Information Event on NRFU and Horizon Europe Grant Opportunities

On April 28–29, 2026, the Deputy Head of the IT Department for Research, Associate Professor Yuliia Parfenenko, and the Deputy Head of the IT Department for International Cooperation, Professor Vira Shendryk, joined online an information event titled “Grant Opportunities of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine and Support Instruments within the Horizon Europe Programme”, organized by the National Research Foundation of Ukraine.

During the event, participants learned about the key areas of activity of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine, available research funding instruments, and the main procedures for organizing grant competitions.

The programme also presented current opportunities for Ukrainian researchers to participate in Horizon Europe. Particular attention was given to support instruments for research and innovation projects, as well as to the legal and financial aspects of proposal preparation. Participants were also introduced to the Funding & Tenders Portal, the main EU platform for searching calls and submitting project proposals.

Special focus was placed on open science practices, international research cooperation, and practical recommendations for preparing competitive grant applications.

Participation in such events helps strengthen awareness of international research funding opportunities, promotes international collaboration, and supports the development of new research and innovation projects within the programmes of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine and Horizon Europe.

🎓 IT4Teens Webinar Series Successfully Completed and Project Competition Announced

The Department of Information Technologies at Sumy State University has successfully completed the IT4Teens series of free webinars aimed at students of grades 8–11.

Throughout the series, participants had the opportunity to explore modern IT fields and gain practical skills in 3D modeling, game development, and web technologies. The webinars were held online and combined theoretical knowledge with hands-on tasks.

📅 The program included the following sessions:

creating a 3D room design using Blender

modeling and lighting setup in Unreal Engine 5

developing interactive game elements in Unreal Engine 5

building a website “Student Task Planner”

Participation in the webinars allowed students to gain their first experience with modern tools, develop creative thinking, and create their own mini-projects.

As a logical continuation of the training series, the department has announced the IT4Teens Project Competition, providing participants with an opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired.

🏆 Competition Categories:

World Builder (UE5) — creation of an interactive game environment

3D Artist (Blender) — project “My 3D Room in Blender”

Web Architect (Web) — development of a functional task planner

⏳ Competition timeline:

until May 3 (inclusive) — submission of projects

May 4–8 — evaluation by the competition committee

Projects will be evaluated based on creativity, quality of implementation, relevance to the topic, and functionality.

🏅 The best projects will be awarded prizes.

Such initiatives contribute to the promotion of IT education among young people, the development of practical digital skills, and help students make informed career choices. The department plans to continue developing similar initiatives aimed at supporting and nurturing future IT professionals.

🎓 A series of free IT webinars for school pupils has begun as part of the IT4Teens initiative

The Department of Information Technology at Sumy State University has launched a series of free IT4Teens webinars aimed at pupils in Years 8–11.

The initiative aims to introduce school pupils to current trends in the IT sector, including 3D design, game development and web technologies. Participants have the opportunity to gain practical skills in using the latest tools and to create their own mini-projects.

The first webinar, held on 15 April, focused on working in the Blender environment, where participants designed their own room in 3D.

📅 Schedule of upcoming sessions:

 

16 April — modelling a house with lighting in Unreal Engine 5

17 April — creating interactive game elements in Unreal Engine 5

21–22 April — developing the ‘School Student’s Task Planner’ website

The sessions are held remotely using the Zoom platform, allowing participants from different regions to join.

Hosting such events is a key part of the department’s career guidance work, as they help school pupils better understand modern IT fields and decide on their future careers. Furthermore, taking part in practical webinars helps develop digital skills, creative thinking and the ability to work independently on projects.

The IT4Teens webinar series is part of the department’s activities aimed at promoting IT education among young people and attracting prospective students to study at the university.

Open Lecture on Web Technologies and Web Design

On March 24, 2026, IT industry expert Illia Prytula delivered an online open lecture for third-year bachelor students of the “Information Technology Design” educational program as part of the “Web Technologies and Web Design” course. The lecture focused on object-oriented programming in JavaScript. Attending the session were the course lecturer, Professor Vira Shendryk, and IT department faculty members, Associate Professor Yuliia Parfenenko and Professor Serhii Tymchuk.

The lecture covered JavaScript objects, their types and usage, inheritance, and static properties and methods. Students also explored code reuse with mixins, working with promises, asynchronous programming using async/await, and the JavaScript event loop.

The session combined theory with practical demonstrations, allowing students to see concepts in action. Participants actively engaged in discussions, asked questions, and examined complex aspects of the topic. The lecture concluded with an open discussion, giving students the opportunity to share their insights.

The IT Department thanks Illia Prytula for his collaboration, support in preparing teaching materials, and contribution to the lecture.

SMARTINDUSTRY 2026: A Platform for Discussing Future Technologies

On March 26–27, the international scientific and practical conference SMARTINDUSTRY 2026 “Smart Automation and Robotics for the Industry of the Future” took place at Lviv Polytechnic National University. The event brought together scientists, engineers, and business representatives to discuss current challenges and prospects of modern industry.

Representatives of the Department of Information Technologies of Sumy State University joined the conference and actively participated in professional discussions and knowledge exchange: Yana CHIBYRYAK, PhD, Associate Professor, and Evgeny LAVROV, Doctor of Engineering, Professor.

During the event, participants focused on the implementation of artificial intelligence, robotics, and intelligent systems in industry. Particular attention was paid to the following areas:

  • automation of production processes,
  • application of AI and machine learning in robotics,
  • development of smart enterprises,
  • cybersecurity of industrial systems.

As part of the conference, an exhibition of innovative developments was also held, showcasing modern solutions in computer vision, industrial automation, and IT.

Participation in such international events contributes to the development of the department`s and university’s scientific potential, expansion of professional networks, and integration into the global academic community.
